How a Comfortable Environment Promotes Focus and Motivation
Since study and work can tend to be hard work for those with a learning disability, any distraction can sometimes make the difference between powering through to success and being hopelessly driven off track. But did you know that something as easy as swapping out your chair can help you stay focused and motivated?
A study conducted by the University of Alberta demonstrates that pain can affect your memory and concentration. Pain inhibits the ability to hold information for processing and long-term storage. This means it’s not only more difficult to remember information over long periods of time, but it also makes it tougher to focus in the present moment.
Lesser irritants can also be distracting - high or low temperature, poor lighting, and even unpleasant smells or itchy textures can compete for your attention. When outfitting your work or study environment, try evaluating your space with each of your 5 senses and addressing any sources of pain or irritation that you find. Be creative - even opting for a cozy seat over an itchy one can make a huge change.
Common solutions include adding a standing desk for your office, lumbar support pillow to your desk chair, blue-light filter for your computer screen, ergonomic solutions for your mouse and/or keyboard, and brighter lighting for your workspace (helpful tip: if you are limited by your available wattage, opt for LED light bulbs, which draw far less power while emitting more light).
