Exploring Phytobiomes Around False Creek
Would you like to learn more about plants, their associated organisms and environment (Phytobiomes) with instructors around science and arts? This August we will do hands-on learning outside in the Charleson Park and general area, such as Granville Island, nearby Eaton Arrowsmith School for the first half of the week. For the second half of the week we will be doing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) activities inside to apply what we learn to science fair with the arts celebration. The structure more specifically are these topics:
Day 1: Hypothesis generation + outdoors exploration (data thinking).
Day 2: Study design + outdoors exploration (data gathering).
Day 3: Complexity in science + outdoors exploration (data testing).
Day 4: Review and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) + arts activities inside (knowledge translation).
Day 5: STEAM presentation (mini science fair or small art piece on what learned) + arts activities inside (knowledge translation).

Instructors:
Laura Super
Laura Super is an early career (PhD, UBC 2023) botanist, ecologist and sustainability researcher especially passionate about science and general teaching, research and outreach. Laura is an interdisciplinary person and has experience in educational psychology research teaching in classrooms with science and the arts, and has freelance tutored elementary, high school, and university students, volunteered at Science World, Beaty Biodiversity Museum, and other organizations, as well as weekly mentors and co-learns, in the Phytobiome Research Working Group, for all ages online.
Howard Eaton
Howard Eaton, Ed. M earned his B.A. in Psychology at UBC and then his M.Ed. at Boston University in Special Education. He is the Founder/Director of Eaton Arrowsmith Schools both Vancouver BC, Redmond WA and now online with Eaton Arrowsmith School Online. He is an avid nature photographer and thrilled to be co-teaching this camp with Laura.
Summer S.T.E.A.M. Camp
DESIGN
The Design STEAM Summer Camp will teach students how to develop design ideas under specific parameters. We will be doing activities that involve engineering and design. Some of the projects include spaghetti towers and bridges, understanding colour theory and the elements of design, culminating with a cardboard stool project.

Nathan L.
Nathan Lo is an Alumni of Emily Carr's Design program focusing on product and furniture design. He has worked on designing shoes. He is currently finishing off an Interior Design Diploma at BCIT.
